This last year at the KASK Ghent has been an extremely intense learning process for me. I am lucky to have mentors who supported me all the way, encouraged me when things seemed hard and challenged my views. To Jan Kempenaers, Dirk Braeckman and Steven Jacobs, my sincere gratitude.
Jan Kempenaers’ “The Crane” and “Dead End” have changed my view about landscape and since then become a great influence for me.
I was introduced to Jan Kempenaers in person by Hans Theys, who has written a beautiful text for this book. From Hans I learn a lot about art as well as life; he has taught me to create works without having or willing to please other people, to (dare to) be who I am and not to stay who I thought I was.
Having Dirk Braeckman as a supervisor is a great opportunity. Beside his friendly supervision -even when he was unwell, I am lucky to have the chance to also be guided by Erik Eelbode, his assistant.
Steven Jacobs has helped me a lot in writing my thesis about family portraits in photography. His broad knowledge and interesting views are a great source for me to learn from.
I wish to thank Lynne Cohen for her kind attention to my works. I have adored her work terribly and now I get to know her terrific friendliness.
A special note of thanks goes to to my photography teachers and theory lecturers at the KASK Hogeschool Gent. Annelies De Mey, Guy Marchal and Hans Vos are exemplary in photography class. I thank Hugo de Block for stuffing me with theories about materiality, which in turn has become a great help for this work.
I would like to express my deep respect towards those who dedicate themselves to the studies on Indonesia, the politics and our culture, which in turn support us toward more democracy. Two of them I know personally are Professor Dwight King from the Northern Illinois University and Professor Dan Slater from the University of Chicago.
My gratitude to these families who received me with open heart and warm friendship through my work process : Aerts family, Aerts-Muyllaert family, Muylle family, Van Dendriessche family, Manderick family, Bosteels family, Kilozo family, Mam Jeanne Franchomme, Van Wessem family, Martha and Kevin Dimodica, Dirdjosubroto family, Huppert family, Professor King, Nico and Fenny, Lily and Ali Akrom, and Vermonte-Febrina family.
These people have become my best friends these past years : Reinhilde Aerts, Tina Cochet, Laura Wauters, Severine Manderick, Marie Van Dendriessche. They are there for me and make things bearable anytime needed. Maritsa Demeester and Cecilia Derwael have been very kind and helpful. With my classmates Michiel De Cleene and Jorik van Esch, both are also students of Jan Kempenaers, I had interesting talks about photography. Also to my schoolmates who made studying fun, I love you all.
I thank Sebastian Schutyser for the good friendship and terrible jokes. Also to my long best friends: Amerta Kusuma, Irnawati W.K., Maria Shanti, Doimir Z. Arif, Anik Khasnawati, Indri Krisna.
